You have no idea how deeply consumption has penetrated american culture. Even today, with the economy in crisis, commercials are still telling TV watchers to keep on consuming, and people are meauring how much they SAVE on purchases they make, rather than measuring how much they actually spend. I had a colleauge from work tell me the other day what great clothes she bought, and that she SAVED over $160… I didn’t have the courage to ask her (point out) how much she actually spent…
I am hesitant to mention the amount of paper waste in this country… not only in form of junk mail (magazines upon magazines of coupons), but every bill comes with a return envelope – 90% of which ends up in the recycle bin (or worse, the trash).
For a good couple of years now, I have not only been recycling as much as I possibly can, but I have conciously tried to reduce my “footprint” by curbing my consumption and buying mostly only what I really need. I only wish more people were aware of the issues at hand, and would understand that their small contribution can go a very long way
